GVWR, GCWR, and tongue weight — your real limit, not the brochure number

Advertised max-tow numbers assume a stripped truck with a 150-lb driver. This calculator runs the three constraints that actually stop you, in the order a towing engineer would check them, and tells you which one binds.
Payload = GVWR − curb weight. Payload left for tongue = payload − passengers − cargo. Max trailer by payload = payload-left ÷ tongue weight percent. Max trailer by GCWR = GCWR − curb weight − passengers − cargo. Your max is the smallest of those two and the hitch rating. Enter a loaded trailer weight and the calculator checks it three ways: people + tongue ≤ payload, truck + trailer ≤ GCWR, and tongue weight inside the 10–15% (or 15–20% for gooseneck) stability band.
Copy GVWR from the door-jamb sticker and GCWR from the owner's manual towing chart. For curb weight, use the manufacturer spec unless you've weighed the truck — options like diesel engines, big cabs, and 4WD quietly add hundreds of pounds, each one stolen directly from payload. Count everything riding in the truck: a family of four with firewood and a toolbox easily clears 700 lb.
Half-ton pickup: GVWR 7,350, GCWR 17,000, curb 5,500, with 700 lb of family and gear, a 10,000-lb hitch, towing a conventional trailer at 12% tongue. Payload = 7,350 − 5,500 = 1,850 lb. After passengers and cargo: 1,150 lb left for tongue weight. Max trailer by payload = 1,150 ÷ 0.12 = 9,583 lb; by GCWR = 17,000 − 5,500 − 700 = 10,800 lb; hitch allows 10,000. The real answer is 9,583 lb, and the binding constraint is payload, not the drivetrain.
Now check an actual load — an 8,000-lb travel trailer. Tongue at 12% = 960 lb; people + tongue = 1,660 ≤ 1,850 payload, so you're legal on the axles with 190 lb to spare. Combined = 5,500 + 700 + 8,000 = 14,200 ≤ 17,000 GCWR with 2,800 lb of headroom. It tows. By contrast, a 15,000-lb fifth wheel at 18% tongue presses 2,700 lb onto the truck — 1,550 lb more than the 1,150 lb left after passengers and 850 lb over the truck's entire payload, which is why fifth-wheels live behind 2500/3500-class trucks.
Take GCWR and subtract the truck's curb weight plus passengers and cargo — that's the engine-and-brakes ceiling. Then check payload: GVWR minus curb weight is your payload, and the trailer's tongue weight must fit inside what's left after people and gear. Your real limit is the smaller of the two, capped by the hitch's rating. Payload is the binding constraint far more often than the advertised max tow rating.
GVWR is the maximum the truck itself can weigh loaded — truck plus fuel, people, and cargo. GCWR is the maximum of truck plus trailer combined. Payload = GVWR minus curb weight. Max trailer by powertrain = GCWR minus actual truck weight. Both numbers are on your door-jamb sticker or in the towing section of the owner's manual.
Tongue weight comes out of payload, not out of the trailer. For a bumper-pull trailer, tongue weight should be 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight (aim for 12%); fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers run 15-20%. Whatever the percentage works out to, it plus passengers and cargo in the truck must stay under GVWR minus curb weight. Exceed payload and you overload the rear axle even if the engine can pull the load fine.
Because the tow rating assumes a nearly empty truck. Every pound of people, firewood, toolbox, and tongue weight eats payload first, and payload is typically 1,400-2,300 lb on a half-ton versus a 10,000+ lb tow rating. At 12% tongue weight, a 10,800-lb GCWR ceiling can become a 9,583-lb payload-limited max once 700 lb of passengers ride along.
General rule from hitch makers: use weight distribution once the trailer exceeds about 5,000 lb or half the truck's weight, and many vehicle manufacturers require it above a stated trailer weight in the towing guide. It doesn't raise payload, but it spreads tongue load to the front axle and improves steering and braking. Sway control is a separate, equally cheap add for bumper-pulls.
GVWR is printed on the certification sticker in the driver's door jamb. Payload is usually on the same or the tire-pressure sticker, phrased as "The combined weight of occupants and cargo shall not exceed X lb." GCWR and the max trailer rating live in the owner's manual's towing section, which varies by engine, cab, bed, axle ratio, and drive — so two identical-looking trucks can have very different numbers.
