"8 glasses a day" was never a personalized number. Water needs scale with body size, climb with sweat, and stretch in heat. This calculator starts from weight and layers on the two biggest adjusters: exercise minutes and climate.
Baseline (oz) = body weight (lb) ร 0.5, which is the same as roughly 30โ35 mL per kg in metric. Add 0.4 oz per minute of exercise (12 oz per half hour). Multiply the total by 1.1 in hot or humid weather, or 1.05 in dry air or at altitude where you lose more to breathing and dry sweat. Pounds convert at 1 kg = 2.2046 lb, and 1 US fluid ounce = 29.57 mL.

The result shows your target four ways, because nobody eyeballs liters at a water fountain. If you live somewhere with real seasons, run it twice: your January and July numbers can differ by 20 oz.
A 180 lb runner training 45 minutes on a humid August morning: baseline is 180 ร 0.5 = 90 oz, exercise adds 45 ร 0.4 = 18 oz, for 108 oz before the weather. The 1.1 humid multiplier takes it to 118.8, call it 119 oz. That's 3.5 L, about 15 cups, or seven 16.9 oz bottles spread across the day. Compare the same runner on a rest day in November: 90 oz, full stop, nearly a full liter less.
One honest caveat: body weight formulas estimate, they don't measure. The field test that beats them is weighing yourself before and after a hard hour: each pound lost is about 16 oz of actual sweat.
