Each plate is a field of randomly sized dots in red, orange, and green families, all matched for brightness. A number is drawn inside the dot field using dots of a slightly shifted hue. People with normal red-green vision can pick out the number; people with protanopia or deuteranopia (the most common color vision deficiencies) struggle to separate the number from the background because their eyes compress those hues together.
Scoring most plates correctly suggests normal red-green color vision. Missing several plates suggests a possible red-green deficiency — roughly 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have one. Many people live with mild color deficiency without ever noticing; it usually affects distinguishing reds/greens/browns, not everyday vision quality.
