For contrast, reading averages 238 WPM in research by Brysbaert (2014) and conversational speech runs 130 to 150 WPM. Typing is the slowest of the three, which is why dictation and shorthand exist. Court reporters "type" 225+ WPM, but on stenotype machines that chord entire syllables per stroke.
This is a standard forward-only typing test. The timer starts on your first keystroke, every character you type is compared against the passage, and the run ends when the clock runs out or you finish the text. There's no backspacing, which mirrors how WPM exams and most employer tests score: errors count against you and you keep moving.
Gross WPM = all characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed. Net WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. The divide-by-five convention treats an average English word as five characters, spaces included, so results are comparable across passages and keyboards.
Pick a duration, 60 seconds is the standard, click the passage area, and type what you see. Keep your eyes on the text, not your hands. When the run finishes you'll get net WPM, gross WPM, accuracy, and error count. Take it two or three times; your first run is usually a few WPM under your steady pace.
Say you type 348 characters in 60 seconds and 340 of them are correct. Gross WPM is 348 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 69.6, so about 70. Accuracy is 340 ÷ 348 = 97.7%. Net WPM is 340 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 68, which is the number to quote on a resume or in a hiring test. The 8 wrong characters cost you 1.6 WPM.
The average adult types around 40 words per minute, with most large typing-test samples landing between 38 and 42 WPM at 90 to 95 percent accuracy. Reading is far faster, around 238 WPM in reading research, and speaking lands near 130 to 150 WPM. Anything at 60 WPM or above is faster than most office jobs require.
Industry standard treats every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Gross WPM equals all characters typed divided by 5 divided by minutes elapsed. Accuracy matters more than raw speed for most jobs: 65 WPM at 98 percent accuracy beats 80 WPM at 88 percent, because fixing errors costs more time than typing carefully in the first place.
Stella Pajunas typed 216 words per minute on an IBM electric typewriter in 1946, still the commonly cited record for sustained typing. Barbara Blackburn averaged around 150 WPM and peaked near 212 WPM on a Dvorak layout in the 1980s. Court reporters exceed 225 WPM, but on stenotype machines that chord whole words, not regular keyboards.
Learn proper touch typing so each finger owns its keys and your eyes stay on the screen, then practice short daily sessions at a speed where accuracy stays above 97 percent.
