Anchored to published rates: Markel and USAA start cancellation at $130 (limits from $7,500), and The Knot pegs the overall wedding-insurance range at $75–$550. Premiums scale sublinearly — small budgets pay 1.5–2.5% of insured costs, large ones under 1%.

One-day liability at $500K–$1M limits runs $75–$185 at most carriers; $2M pushes toward $250. Liquor liability adds $50–$100 where it isn't already included.
Wedding insurance bundles two coverages that have almost nothing to do with each other. Liability protects the venue and your guests: if a guest trips over a speaker cable or a candle sets a drapery alight, the policy pays. Cancellation coverage protects your deposits: if the vendor goes under, the venue floods, or the mother of the bride lands in the hospital, you get the money back. Pricing them separately is how carriers quote, so it's how this calculator works.
Estimated premium = liability premium (fixed by limit tier) + cancellation premium (fixed by coverage tier) + liquor add-on ($75 typical) − 10% bundle discount when you carry both liability and cancellation. WedSafe advertises up to 15% off for bundling; 10% is a conservative middle. The range shown runs roughly 20% below to 25% above the typical figure, which brackets how much carriers and states vary.
Set cancellation coverage to your total non-refundable commitments — venue, caterer, photographer deposits, attire, not the whole dream budget. Pick your liability limit from the venue's contract ($1M is the standard requirement; skip it only if your venue doesn't ask and you're comfortable self-insuring). Add the liquor add-on unless you're dry; hosts serving alcohol without it wear the liability personally.
Take the average $34,200 wedding. Round the insured deposits to $30,000, add the $1M liability your venue contract requires, and include liquor: $280 (cancellation) + $140 (liability) + $75 (liquor) = $495. The bundle discount takes it to $445.50, or about 1.3% of the insured costs — one canceled vendor would repay the premium many times over.
The lean version matters too. A backyard wedding with $7,500 of deposits and a $500K liability requirement prices at roughly $130 + $100 = $230, less $23 with the discount: $207. Insurance for the price of two guest meals.
Wedding insurance runs $75 to $550 for most couples. Liability-only coverage (the kind venues require) starts at $75 to $100 and rarely exceeds $250. Cancellation coverage starts around $130 at the $7,500 level and scales to roughly $575 at $100,000 of coverage. Bundling both, most couples land between $200 and $350 total.
Two different coverages ride under one policy. Cancellation and postponement coverage reimburses lost deposits when a vendor goes bankrupt, the venue closes, extreme weather forces a change, or a key person (couple, immediate family, officiant) falls seriously ill or is military-deployed. Liability coverage pays when a guest is injured or property is damaged, and most venues require $1 million of it in your contract.
No. A change of heart is the standard exclusion on every wedding cancellation policy — carriers will not pay because one partner backs out. Coverage is for circumstances outside the couple's control, not a change of decision.
Many do, especially hotels, estates, and public spaces. The typical requirement is $1 million of event liability coverage naming the venue as an additional insured, and it exists because their own policy does not extend to your event. A liability-only policy at $75 to $185 satisfies almost every venue clause.
Buy cancellation coverage as soon as you start paying non-refundable deposits — the policy needs to be in force before a covered loss, not after. Some carriers require the policy to be purchased at least two weeks before the wedding, so don't leave it to the final week. Liability coverage can be added any time before the event.
Serious illness of the couple or immediate family is a covered reason on standard cancellation policies, usually with documentation. Broad pandemic or government-mandated shutdown coverage is generally excluded — if a public-health order closes your venue, some policies pay only if the venue itself is unavailable, so read the exclusions before buying.
This calculator produces cost estimates from published carrier rates, not quotes. Premiums vary by state, venue, guest count, and insurer. It is not insurance, legal, or financial advice — read any policy's exclusions before you buy.
