Building a set of stairs is an exercise in one constraint: the total rise from finished floor to finished floor must divide into equal, comfortable steps. The total run is then a product of how many risers you have and the tread depth you choose. This calculator takes the two measurements you can actually get on site — total rise and intended tread depth — and returns riser count, individual riser height, total run, stringer length, and the stair angle, all of which you need before cutting a single board.
The International Residential Code (IRC), the model code adopted in most US jurisdictions, caps riser height at 7¾ inches and sets a minimum tread depth of 10 inches for residential stairs, with a rule that the largest riser can exceed the smallest by no more than ⅜ inch. Within those bounds, the comfortable zone most builders target is a 7-inch riser with a 10½ to 11-inch tread — the proportions generations of carpenters verified by use.
Accuracy starts with measurement discipline. Total rise is from the surface where the stair starts to the surface where it ends — finished floor to finished floor, not subfloor to subfloor, if flooring thicknesses differ at the two levels. A half-inch error at the top becomes a half-inch error in the last riser, and that is exactly the trip hazard codes exist to prevent.
Riser count is total rise divided by the target riser height, rounded up to the next whole number — stairs cannot have a fractional step. Actual riser height is then total rise divided by that whole count. For a total rise of 106 inches at a 7-inch target: 106 ÷ 7 = 15.14, so 16 risers, giving an actual riser of 106 ÷ 16 = 6.625 inches, comfortably within code.
Total run is (number of treads) × tread depth, and the number of treads is one less than the number of risers — the top riser lands you on the upper floor, which serves as its own tread. A 2×12 stringer cut for 16 risers at a 10-inch tread has a theoretical run of 15 × 10 = 150 inches. Stringer length follows the Pythagorean theorem: √(total rise² + total run²) = √(106² + 150²) ≈ 183.6 inches, about 15.3 feet — before adding any thickness for the riser drop at the top.

Two classic comfort checks are worth memorizing. The rule of 25 says riser plus tread (in inches) should land near 25 — a 7½ riser pairs with a 10 tread. The 2R + T rule says twice the riser plus the tread should land near 25 inches as well, which approximates a natural walking stride. Neither is code; both are century-old geometry that still predicts which stairs feel easy.

With riser and tread in hand, set your framing square with stair gauges at the riser and tread dimensions, step off the count along a 2×12, and subtract the tread thickness from the bottom cut so the finished riser stays equal top to bottom when treads are installed. Most crews cut one stringer carefully, test-fit it, then use it as the pattern for the rest. Three stringers are the usual minimum for a 36-inch stair with 5/4 or 2x treads; wider stairs need stringer spacing that keeps treads from flexing, commonly 16 inches on center or closer for thinner tread stock.
What is the ideal riser height for stairs?
Between 6½ and 7¼ inches for residential comfort. Code allows up to 7¾ inches (IRC), but stairs near the maximum feel steeper, especially for children and older adults.
How do I calculate the number of steps?

How long is the stair stringer?

Why is there one fewer tread than risers?
