Week 7 is a growth spurt for the brain: roughly 100 new brain cells form every minute. The embryo's head is huge relative to the body, and paddle-shaped hands are appearing at the ends of the arm buds.
The brain divides into its three sections, and cells for the pituitary gland form. Kidneys move into position, and the umbilical cord, your baby's lifeline for the next seven-plus months, is fully functional. Mouth and tongue become visible.
Gestationally, week 7 means you are 6 weeks and 0 to 6 days pregnant, day 43 to day 49 counted from the first day of your last period. This is week 7 of the first trimester (weeks 1–13).
