Typical national ranges for a mainstream 5-quart car at independent and quick-lube shops. Luxury brands, dealers and 7-9 quart trucks run higher, often 20-40% above these bands. Yearly figures use each row's own price and interval extremes at 12,000 miles a year.
Oil changes are one of the few car costs you can predict to the dollar, because everything is known: your price per change, your interval, and how far you drive. The calculator turns those into the three numbers that actually matter: cost per year, cost per mile, and what it adds up to over five years.
Changes per year = annual miles รท interval. Annual cost = changes per year ร price per change. Cost per mile = price per change รท interval. In DIY mode, the price per change is quarts ร price per quart + filter, and the calculator also shows what the same driving would cost in the other two oil types at typical shop pricing, so you can see the gap rather than guess at it.

Switch Service to DIY to price it by quarts, per-quart cost and filter. Luxury cars taking 7-9 quarts should bump the quarts field, since capacity, not labor, is what moves those bills.
A 2020 Camry on full synthetic: $95 a change, every 7,500 miles, 12,000 miles a year. That's 12,000 รท 7,500 = 1.6 changes, so $152 a year and about $0.013 a mile. Run the same car on conventional at $50 every 5,000 miles and you get 2.4 changes, $120 a year, $0.010 a mile. Over ten years that's $1,520 for synthetic against $1,200 for conventional, a gap of just $320.
DIY flips the math. Five quarts of name-brand synthetic and a good filter run $36-$70, so the same 1.6 annual changes cost $58-$112. That's the cheapest synthetic oil you can put in a car, and most parts stores recycle the used oil for free.
National shop ranges run about $35 to $75 for conventional oil, $45 to $85 for a synthetic blend, and $65 to $125 for full synthetic on a mainstream car. Luxury marques and trucks that take 7 to 9 quarts sit at the top of each band or above it. DIY costs are just parts: roughly $28 to $42 conventional and $36 to $70 full synthetic for a 5-quart car.
Most owner's manuals for cars on full synthetic call for 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first. Severe service (short trips, towing, dust, extreme heat or cold) cuts that to about 5,000 miles. Follow the oil-life monitor or the manual, not the sticker the shop prints.
On cost per mile it is close to a wash. A $95 synthetic change every 7,500 miles is $0.013 a mile; a $50 conventional change every 5,000 miles is $0.010. That is two to three tenths of a cent apart. Synthetic buys better heat resistance and longer change intervals, and doing it yourself ($36 to $70 in parts) makes it the cheapest per mile of all.
Parts only: a 5-quart jug of full synthetic runs $28 to $45 (single quarts run $7 to $11 each) and a quality filter adds $8 to $15, so $36 to $70 in parts depending on jug versus quart pricing. A truck taking 6 quarts runs about $50 to $81. Most auto parts stores take used oil and filters for free recycling.
No engine oil, so no oil changes. EVs still need tire rotations, cabin air filters, brake fluid every 2 to 3 years, and battery coolant per the maintenance schedule, which is why their maintenance budget runs roughly a third to half of a gas car's.
