If PDFescape just asked you to upgrade, there's usually a free way to finish the job. For adding text, filling flat forms, highlighting and signing, our in-browser PDF Add Text, PDF Annotate and Sign PDF do it without uploading anything. Fillable forms open fine in any modern browser. Sejda is the best free pick for changing existing text, and Mac users already have Preview.
PDFescape's free online editor still covers the basics. Where people get stuck is the line between free and paid, which has shifted over the years. Here's how it looked on PDFescape's own pricing page in October 2026.
| What you get | Free | Premium | Ultimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $2.99/mo yearly, $5.99 monthly | $5.99/mo yearly, $8.99 monthly |
| Upload limit per file | 10 MB | 40 MB | Not stated |
| Recent document storage | 10 files, 7 days | 100 files, 30 days | No expiry |
| Annotate, add text, fill and save forms | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Create basic forms, password protect | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Ads | Yes | No | No |
| Edit existing text and images | No | Yes | Yes |
| Merge, extract, compress, page numbers, watermark | No | Yes | Yes |
| Convert to Word, scan to PDF | No | Yes | Yes |
| Redaction, digital signatures, advanced forms | No | No | Yes |
Third-party listings also mention a 100-page cap on free documents. PDFescape's pricing page doesn't spell that out, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
Usually it's one specific job. You open a PDF to merge it with another, shrink it for an email, or fix a typo, and the button you need has a Premium badge on it. The free plan is generous for filling and marking up, but the jobs people search for most often, merging and compressing, aren't in it.
The 10 MB upload cap is the next snag. A scanned contract or a phone-photo PDF passes 10 MB quickly, and PDFescape's answer is the 40 MB Premium limit. Browser-based tools don't have an upload cap at all, because nothing is uploaded. The limit is your device's memory.
Then there's where the file sits. PDFescape is an online editor, so your document goes to its servers, and the free plan keeps recent files for seven days. That's fine for a menu or a flyer. For a lease, a medical form or anything with your Social Security number on it, many people would rather the file stayed put.
Finally, PDFescape's desktop app is Windows only. Mac and Chromebook users are limited to the website, which is where free alternatives tend to be stronger anyway.
Most people who leave PDFescape want one of four things: fill a form, add some text, sign, or merge and shrink a file. Here's where to go for each, and the catch.
| Option | Where your file goes | Free limit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ToolAspect PDF tools | Stays in your browser | No file or task cap | Adding text, annotating, signing, redacting, merging, compressing |
| Your browser's PDF viewer | Your device | Free | Fillable forms in Chrome, Edge or Firefox |
| Mac Preview | Your Mac | Free with macOS | Forms, text boxes, signatures, page reordering |
| Sejda (online) | Sejda's servers | 3 tasks an hour, 200 pages or 50 MB per file | Changing existing words in place |
| PDF24 | EU servers online, or offline on Windows | No stated limit | A big free toolbox, desktop app on Windows |
| LibreOffice Draw | Your computer | Free, open source | Editing text in simple, single-column PDFs |
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Your computer | Free | Filling, signing and commenting |
Open PDF Add Text, load the file, click the spot where the text should go and type. You can pick Helvetica, Times or Courier, set the size and color, and stamp the same text on every page if you need to, which is handy for dates or "APPROVED" stamps. The download keeps the original file intact with your text added on top.
That's the right tool for a flat form, the kind printed to PDF with blank lines and no clickable fields. For a fillable form, you don't need a tool at all. Open it in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, click into the fields, type, and save or print to PDF. Mac Preview and the free Adobe Reader do the same. Our guide to adding text to a PDF walks through both cases.
This is the one job PDFescape keeps behind Premium, and it's hard for everyone. A PDF doesn't store paragraphs. It stores bits of text pinned to exact positions on the page, so changing a word without shifting everything around takes real work.
Sejda handles it best among free options, within its three tasks an hour. LibreOffice Draw opens a PDF as editable shapes and copes with simple pages. If the original is a Word file, editing that and exporting a new PDF beats any PDF editor. And if all you need is to add a correction next to the old text, PDF Add Text or a comment in PDF Annotate is often enough.
| PDFescape feature | Plan needed | Free swap | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add text, fill flat forms | Free | PDF Add Text | Click to place, three fonts, any color |
| Annotate and highlight | Free | PDF Annotate | Writes real PDF annotations that Acrobat and Preview can edit later |
| Password protect | Free | Password Protect PDF | AES-256, done locally with qpdf |
| Merge and extract pages | Premium | Merge PDF, Extract Pages | No file-count cap |
| Compress | Premium | Compress PDF | Lossless clean-up or re-render at a lower DPI |
| Page numbers, watermark | Premium | Page Numbers, Watermark PDF | Choose position, format and text |
| Signatures | Ultimate (digital) | Sign PDF | Draw, type or upload. No certificate or audit trail |
| Redaction | Ultimate | Redact PDF | Burns boxes into page images, so the text is really gone |
| Convert to Word | Premium | Microsoft Word or LibreOffice | Simple layouts convert well, columns may shift |
No 10 MB cap, no account, no ads in your document. The file stays on your device.
Open PDF Add TextOnly if you use a real redaction tool. PDFescape's free whiteout and most "edit PDF" sites draw a shape on top of the text. It looks hidden, but the words are still in the file, and anyone can copy them out or remove the box.
Redact PDF works differently. It turns each page into an image with your boxes burned in, then builds a fresh PDF from those images. The covered text is gone for good, along with the old metadata and comments. The trade-off is that the rest of the page isn't selectable text anymore. Our redaction guide explains how to check the result before you send it.
For forms, start with the browser you already have, then reach for PDF Add Text if the form isn't fillable. For markup and signatures, PDF Annotate and Sign PDF cover it without an upload. If you need to change existing words, try Sejda's free tier. And if you're on a Mac, Preview quietly does most of what PDFescape Premium sells.
PDFescape Premium is cheap and still worth it if you edit PDFs every week and want everything in one place. For occasional jobs, free tools are enough. Our Smallpdf alternatives and free Adobe Acrobat alternatives guides cover the other big names.
The online editor has a free plan. It lets you annotate, add text, fill and save forms, create basic forms and password-protect files, with a 10 MB upload limit and storage for 10 recent files kept for 7 days. Merging, compressing, editing existing text, page numbers and watermarks need Premium, and redaction and digital signatures need Ultimate.
When we checked PDFescape's pricing page in October 2026, Premium was $2.99 a month billed yearly or $5.99 month to month, and Ultimate was $5.99 a month billed yearly or $8.99 month to month. Both came with a 15-day money-back guarantee.
If the form has fillable fields, open it in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Mac Preview, type into the fields and save. No extra tool needed. If it's a flat form with no fields, use a tool that places text where you click, such as ToolAspect's PDF Add Text, which works in your browser without uploading.
You can cover it, but be careful. A white or black box drawn on top leaves the original text in the file, where copy and paste can still find it. To actually remove it, use a real redaction tool. ToolAspect's Redact PDF turns each page into an image with your boxes burned in, so the covered words are gone.
Yes. The online editor works on PDFescape's servers, and its free plan keeps recent files for 7 days. If you'd rather a document never left your device, use a browser-based tool that processes the file locally, or a desktop app such as Preview or LibreOffice.
