How IELTS Band Scores Are Calculated

🎓 8 min read🧮 Formula + rounding rules

You studied for weeks, sat the exam, and a Test Report Form arrived with five numbers: four section bands and one overall. The overall isn't a separate judgment of your English — it's arithmetic on the four sections, with one rounding rule that decides borderline cases. This guide walks the full pipeline: how raw answers become section bands, how sections combine, why 6.25 becomes 6.5, and what your result means on the CEFR scale and to admissions offices.

How does IELTS calculate the overall band score?

The overall band is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — rounded to the nearest half band. Nothing is weighted, nothing is curved against other test-takers, and there's no essay-grade override. A 7.0 in Reading counts exactly as much as a 7.0 in Writing.

Sections (L / R / W / S)AverageOverall band
7.5 / 7.0 / 6.0 / 6.56.7507.0
6.5 / 6.5 / 6.0 / 6.06.2506.5
6.5 / 6.0 / 5.5 / 5.55.8756.0
9.0 / 9.0 / 8.5 / 9.08.8759.0
6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 5.55.8756.0

Run your own four scores through the IELTS band score calculator — it shows the unrounded average alongside the final band so you can see exactly which way the rounding fell.

Why does 6.25 become 6.5?

IELTS reports overall bands in whole and half bands only. When averaging four half-band scores, the mean can only end in .0, .125, .25, .375, .5, .625, .75, or .875. The first and last of those round to the obvious neighbors; the middle ones (.125, .375, .625, .875) go to the nearest half band; and the exact ties — .25 and .75 — round up. That's the rule, and it only ever helps you:

The practical effect: with three sections at 6.5, a fourth at 5.5 still averages 6.25 and rounds up to 6.5. But a fourth at 5.0 averages 6.125 and lands on 6.0. Half a band in one skill is the difference between keeping and losing the overall — worth knowing before you decide which skill to drill last.

How do raw answers become section bands?

Listening and Reading are scored against answer keys: 40 questions, count your correct answers, convert through a band-equivalence table. Writing and Speaking are marked by trained examiners against four published criteria each (Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy), averaged into a half-band score.

The catch with the Listening and Reading tables: every test form is equated separately, so the raw-to-band cutoffs move a little from version to version. A Listening band 7 sits around 30-31 correct on most forms; Academic Reading band 7 around 30-32. Treat any table you find — including ours — as a close approximation, not a contract.

What do the band descriptors actually say?

The nine bands describe increasing command of English, and the labels matter because institutions use the shorthand: band 9 Expert user, 8 Very good, 7 Good, 6 Competent, 5 Modest, 4 Limited, and 3 down to 0 for extremely limited, intermittent, and non-users. Most test-takers worldwide land between 5.5 and 7.0.

On the CEFR scale used by European language policy: band 4.0-5.0 is B1, 5.5-6.5 is B2, 7.0-8.0 is C1, and 8.5-9.0 is C2. When a university asks for "C1 English," it almost always translates to IELTS 6.5 or 7.0 — check the program page for the exact number.

What score do universities and visas require?

Rough anchors from real requirements:

Watch the per-section minimums. A 7.0 overall built from 8.0, 8.0, 6.5, 5.5 still fails a "no skill below 6.0" condition — universities enforce both lines, and the Writing section is where most strong candidates stumble.

Can you game the rounding?

You can't outsmart the mean, but you can aim at it. Say your practice scores hold at L7.5, R7.0, W6.0, S6.5 — average 6.75, overall 7.0. If Writing climbs half a band to 6.5, the average hits 6.875 and the overall is still 7.0; the gain is invisible. But if Writing slips to 5.5, the average drops to 6.625 and the overall falls to 6.5 — the whole result turns on that one section. Use a calculator with your realistic practice scores to find which single half-band, up or down, actually moves your overall. Then spend the last study block there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IELTS overall an average of four scores?

Yes — the simple mean of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, rounded to the nearest half band. All four skills count equally no matter which exam (Academic or General Training) you sat.

Does IELTS round 6.25 up or down?

Up, to 6.5. Averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band and averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band. Averages like 6.125 or 6.625 have a nearest half band (6.0 and 6.5 respectively) and go there.

Which IELTS band is C1?

Band 7.0 through 8.0 maps to C1. Band 8.5-9.0 is C2, 5.5-6.5 is B2, and 4.0-5.0 is B1. Universities asking for 'C1 English' usually mean IELTS 6.5 or 7.0 overall depending on the program.

Can one weak section drag down my overall?

Yes, but only through the average. A 5.5 among three 6.5s averages 6.25, which rounds up to 6.5 anyway — the rounding rule absorbs some damage. But a 5.0 among three 6.5s averages 6.125 and lands on 6.0, half a band below target.

How many correct answers is band 7 in Listening?

Roughly 30-31 out of 40 in Listening, and 30-32 in Academic Reading. The exact cutoff moves between test versions because each form is equated separately, so treat any raw-to-band table as approximate.
