A VIN looks like random noise, but it's a fixed 17-character grid where every position has a job. Read it once with a decoder mentality and you can glance at a dashboard, a title, or a listing and pull out the manufacturer, country, model year, and assembly plant in seconds, plus catch a mistyped or suspicious VIN before any money changes hands. Since 1981, every vehicle sold in the US carries a 17-character VIN in three chunks. Positions 1-3 form the World Manufacturer Identifier: who built it and where the company is based. Positions 4-8 are the Vehicle Descriptor Section, where each maker encodes model, body, engine, and restraint details however it likes. Position 9 is the check digit. Position 10 encodes the model year, position 11 the assembly plant, and positions 12-17 are the production serial that makes the whole string unique.

The first character alone gives you the country: 1, 4, and 5 are the United States, 2 Canada, 3 Mexico, J Japan, K Korea, L China, W Germany, V France or Spain, S the UK, Z Italy, and Y the Nordic countries. One caveat worth knowing: the WMI encodes where the manufacturer is headquartered, not always where your specific car was bolted together. Plenty of "J" Toyotas and Hondas sold in the US were assembled in Kentucky or Ohio; position 11 plus the live decode tells you the actual plant.
Position 9 is a math test the rest of the VIN has to pass. Convert every character to a number, with letters worth 1 through 9 (A=1, B=2, ... H=8, J=1, K=2, skipping I, O, and Q, which never appear in a VIN at all). Multiply each by its position's weight: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10 for the first eight positions, 0 for position 9 itself, then 9 down through 2 for the last eight. Add everything up and take the remainder when divided by 11. That remainder is the check digit, and a remainder of 10 is written as X.

Position 10 cycles through a fixed alphabet that skips I, O, Q, U, and Z along with the digits in between. A is 1980 or 2010, B is 1981 or 2011, and so on through Y, which covers 2000 and 2030; the digits 1 through 9 fill 2001 through 2009. The code repeats every 30 years, so H means 1987 or 2017, and you pick the right one by looking at the vehicle. A 2026 model carries T, a 2025 carries S, and an R is the 1994/2024 pair. For anything built in the last three decades, context settles the ambiguity in a heartbeat.
Mileage, accident history, number of owners, and current title brand. Those live in separate databases (odometer records, insurance claims, state title systems) that commercial vehicle-history reports stitch together from the VIN as a key. The VIN itself is a birth certificate, not a biography. It also won't give you trim colors and option packages beyond what the maker chose to encode; a build sheet or window sticker does that.
No, and any site claiming to hand out current owner names from a VIN is either lying or trafficking in illegally obtained data. The Driver's Privacy Protection Act bars DMVs from releasing personal records tied to a VIN except for permitted uses like litigation, insurance, or employer checks. What a VIN legitimately unlocks: specifications, equipment, open recalls, and, through paid vehicle-history products, accident and title records.

Almost always a transcription error: one character typed or transcribed wrong. Re-read the VIN from the dashboard and door jamb and compare against the title.
