The 85% trap: when weights don't total 100

Mid-semester, the final isn't graded yet. You have quizzes 90 (25%), tests 81 (35%), and projects 88 (25%) — that's 85% of the grade defined. The wrong move is averaging the three scores: (90 + 81 + 88) ÷ 3 = 86.3%. The right move is renormalizing — divide the weighted sum by the weight entered:
