Every December and May, millions of students do the same desperate arithmetic: what score do I need on the final to keep my grade? The formula behind it is one line of algebra, and once you know it, finals week gets a lot less mysterious. RogerHub's final grade calculator made this calculation famous a decade ago; here's the math it runs, the traps weighted grading sets, and tables you can read at a glance.
Required final score = (target grade โ current grade ร (1 โ final weight)) รท final weight
In words: take the grade you want, subtract what you've already banked (your current grade shrunk to the share of the course that isn't the final), and divide what's left by the final's share. Worked example, the one from every syllabus ever: you have a 76%, the final is worth 25%, you want an 80%.
Run the same numbers forward and you see the stakes: a zero on that final leaves you at 57%, a perfect exam lifts you to 82%. The final is worth exactly 25 points of your course grade, no more, no less.
Only three inputs matter: current grade, final weight, and target. Get each from the right place:

Two patterns worth noticing. First, the lower your current grade, the more a heavy final helps you โ 95% needed at 40% weight versus 170% needed at 10% weight from a 70 average. Second, "out of reach" appears fast for A-seekers: from an 88, no 10%-weight final on earth gets you to 90. When the answer is over 100%, the target is gone; the play is the next letter down, extra credit, or a strong finish to protect what you have.

Open the Final Grade Calculator →Many gradebooks don't show one clean "current grade." They show categories: homework 20%, quizzes 30%, tests 30%, final 20%. If you've earned a 92% homework average, an 81% quiz average, and a 77% test average, your current grade isn't the average of those numbers โ it's 92 ร 0.20 + 81 ร 0.30 + 77 ร 0.30 = 18.4 + 24.3 + 23.1 = 65.8%... but only if the categories are complete. If the quiz category isn't full yet, most teachers weight it proportionally, which changes the number.
The practical fix: ask the gradebook (or your teacher) for your cumulative grade with the final excluded, and use that as your current grade. The GPA calculator handles the same weighted-average math for your semester GPA when finals are done.
Students sometimes enter the final's point count (say, 100 points out of a 600-point course) as the weight. Those are different things. Weight means share of the grade: 100 points in a 600-point course is 16.7%, not 30%. If your class runs on pure points, compute weight = final points รท total course points including the final. Or just total your points: (points needed for target โ points earned) รท points possible on the final = required percentage. Same algebra, different dress.
Once finals post, each course grade maps to the 4.0 scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, and so on, with pluses and minuses in between at many schools). Semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points. Your course grade is your current grade times 0.80 plus your exam score times 0.20. So an 84% going in with a 70% on the final lands at 67.2 + 14 = 81.2%. To find the score you need instead of the score you got, solve the same equation backwards: (target โ current ร 0.80) รท 0.20.
Compute your current grade category by category first: homework average times its weight, quiz average times its weight, and so on, skipping the final exam category. That weighted number is your current grade; the final's category weight is the final's weight. Then run the standard formula.
It changes your current grade, not the formula. Recompute your test-category average as if your lowest test were replaced by your expected final score, then use that higher current grade in the formula. This policy is a gift: it raises both your current grade and your ceiling, so the score you need usually drops by several points.
Yes, when its weight is large. At 40% weight, a 90% student who scores 50% on the final drops to 54 + 20 = 74%, two letters. At 10% weight the same collapse only takes them to 86%. The heavier the final, the more your semester of work is a floor you can fall through โ check the weight before you decide how hard to study.
