Not directly, but you can spend your SSI on rent, and paying your own way usually protects the full $994 check. The cuts come when someone else pays, when the rent is very low, or when the place can legally confine you. Here's how each setup works, with 2026 and 2027 numbers.
Not directly. SSA doesn't have a sober living benefit and it doesn't send money to a house. SSI is a monthly cash payment made to you, or to your representative payee, and rent is one of the things it's meant to cover. The federal rate is $994 in 2026 and rises to $1,029 in January 2027, and some states add a supplement.
So the useful question is whether moving in changes your check. Usually it doesn't, as long as you pay your own way and nobody can lock the door on you.
Rent you pay yourself isn't income, so it can't reduce your check. The cut comes when someone else covers your shelter, or when your rent is so low that SSA counts the difference as support. SSA calls this a business arrangement test: if your required rent is at least the presumed maximum value, $351.33 in 2026 and $363 in 2027, you're not receiving support at all.
Here's how that plays out at the 2026 rate, assuming no other income:
| Who covers the room | What SSA counts | Countable after $20 exclusion | Federal SSI |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay the house's required $700 rent | None. It's a business arrangement | $0 | $994 |
| Required rent is only $300 and the room's market value is at least $351.33 | The $51.33 shortfall is imputed | $31.33 | $962.67 |
| A relative pays $100 of your $700 rent, and you show that | The actual $100 | $80 | $914 |
| A relative or friend pays all of it | Presumed value, $351.33 | $331.33 | $662.67 |
| The house lets you stay free | Presumed value, $351.33 | $331.33 | $662.67 |
| A sponsor's home, with free shelter and all meals | One-third reduction, $331.33 | $331.33 | $662.67 |
| A need-based voucher wholly funded by your state or county | Excluded, if SSA agrees it qualifies | $0 | $994 |
The presumed value is a ceiling and you're allowed to rebut it, which is why that $100 row isn't a full $351.33 cut. Bring a receipt or a letter from whoever paid. Vouchers are the row to check before you rely on it. The exclusion covers need-based help that's wholly funded by a state or local government, so money with federal dollars in it may not qualify. Ask SSA how it will treat your program.
It can be, and the difference is confinement. People use "halfway house" and "sober living" for the same building, but SSA looks at what the place can do to you:
| Where you're living | SSI result | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Private sober living house you chose, no court hold | Normal rules | What matters is who pays the rent |
| Halfway house that can lock you in at night as part of a sentence | $0 for a full calendar month | Treated as a public institution, even if you pay the whole charge yourself |
| Private program a court sent you to, no physical confinement, no agency control | Normal rules | SSA's own example treats this resident as living in the community |
| Residential treatment licensed for inpatient medical care, Medicaid pays over half | $30 a month for a full calendar month | Full rate for up to 3 full months if a doctor expects 90 days or less and you're keeping a home |
| Other government-run facility | $0 for a full calendar month | Publicly run residences with 16 or fewer people are exempt |
Our guide to SSI after jail or prison covers restarting benefits once you're out of that kind of placement, and SSI in a group home covers licensed homes with four or more residents.
Length isn't what counts. The $0 and $30 rules only apply for a month you're there from the first day through the last, so most short stays never trigger them:
| Stay | Whole calendar months | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 28 days, Feb 10 to Mar 9 | 0 | No change from the stay itself |
| 28 days, Feb 1 to Feb 28, 2027 | 1 (February) | The rare 28-day stay that counts |
| 60 days, Jan 15 to Mar 15 | 1 (February) | Reduced or stopped for February unless an exception applies |
| 90 days, Mar 15 to Jun 12 | 2 (April, May) | Ask about the 3-month rule before you go in |
Those rows apply only to a government-run facility, or to a licensed medical one where Medicaid pays most of the cost. A private program you or your insurer pays for doesn't lead to the $30 limit in the same way, though your living arrangement still has to be reported.
Usually not. Medicaid can pay for licensed treatment, such as counseling at a clinic, but a sober living house is housing and not a medical service. North Dakota's Medicaid policy spells this out: providers may charge residents for room and board, and Medicaid won't reimburse it. Rules differ by state and a few programs do help with recovery housing, so call your state Medicaid agency or your plan.
That usually leaves rent to your check. Use our rent calculator to see what your income can carry, and ask whether the fee includes food, utilities and drug testing. A house that wants you to sign over your check is a warning sign. Only an SSA-appointed payee can manage your benefit for you. Having over $2,000 on the first of a month makes you ineligible, so track it with the net worth calculator.
Report the move, the new rent and anyone who helps pay it by the 10th day of the following month. Keep a signed lease or house agreement that shows the required rent and your receipts, because that's what proves a business arrangement. If you're newly applying, expect one more question. When there's medical evidence of drug or alcohol use, SSA has to decide whether you'd still be disabled if you stopped. If you would be, addiction doesn't block benefits. Our disability benefits calculator gives you a base amount to plan around.
This is general information based on SSA's regulations and manual as of November 2026, not legal advice.
Yes. SSI is cash paid to you or your payee, and you can spend it on rent at a sober living house. SSA doesn't pay the house directly, and it doesn't have a special sober living benefit. Paying your own required rent doesn't reduce your check as long as the rent is at least $351.33 a month in 2026.
Not always. You'd get nothing for a full calendar month only if the place is a public institution, or a private one acting for corrections, meaning it has authority to physically confine you. A voluntary house with no such authority follows the normal rules.
Usually not. The rule looks at whole calendar months, so a 30-day stay that runs from the middle of one month to the middle of the next doesn't trigger it. If you do stay a whole month in a Medicaid-paid medical facility, the limit is $30, unless you qualify for the short-stay exception.
SSA counts that as in-kind support. If they pay it all, the presumed value of $351.33 applies in 2026, and your federal check falls to $662.67 if you have no other income. If they pay less than that and you can prove it, SSA counts the actual amount.
It can charge you rent, but it can't take control of your benefit unless SSA has appointed it as your representative payee. If someone is pressuring you to sign over your check or hand over your card, contact Social Security at 800-772-1213.
