About this GPS test

This page calls the browser's Geolocation API — the same interface maps apps use — and shows exactly what your device's GPS hardware reports: latitude and longitude, the accuracy radius in meters, and altitude, heading and speed where the hardware provides them. The visualization is pure canvas: the concentric circles scale with the reported accuracy, so you can literally watch a cold start shrink from a few kilometers (cell-tower and Wi-Fi positioning) down to single-digit meters (true satellite lock).

Watch mode keeps listening and logs every update, drawing your movement trail relative to the first fix. It's the quickest way to tell a healthy receiver from a lazy one: a good GPS settles under 10 m within a minute outdoors, and the trail should hug a tight cluster when you stand still. A trail that wanders tens of meters while you sit still indicates a weak antenna or a device relying on coarse network positioning only.

Frequently asked questions

Permission denied — how do I fix it? Click or tap the lock/ⓘ icon next to the address bar, set Location to Allow, and reload. On Android also check the browser app has location permission in Settings → Apps, and that the phone's own Location toggle is on. On iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → your browser → While Using. Chrome also has a global override at chrome://settings/content/location.

Why is my accuracy so bad indoors? Satellite signals barely penetrate roofs and walls, so indoors the browser falls back to Wi-Fi and cell-tower positioning, which can be off by hundreds of meters. That's physics, not a broken GPS. Step outside, wait 1–2 minutes under open sky, and the accuracy should drop under 10 m. If it never improves outdoors with a clear view, the GPS antenna or its connector may be damaged.
