Breed range + body condition score = your dog's healthy weight
There's no single right weight for a breed β a healthy Labrador spans 55β80 lb β but there is a right condition. Vets score body condition on a 9-point scale, where each point above 5 means roughly 10% of ideal body weight in excess. Divide your dog's current weight by that factor: a 90 lb Lab at score 7 is about 20% heavy, so their ideal weight is 90 Γ· 1.2 = 75 lb. Two inputs do the work: where your dog is, and what condition they're in. Breed supplies a healthy range from AKC standards (or enter your own for a mixed breed). The body condition score supplies the correction factor, using the veterinary convention that each point above 5 carries about 10% of ideal body weight: ideal weight = current weight Γ· (1 + 0.1 Γ (BCS β 5)). A 90 lb Labrador scored 7/9 at the vet. Each of the two points above ideal adds 10%, so 90 lb = ideal Γ 1.2, and ideal weight = 90 Γ· 1.2 = 75 lb β inside the breed's 55β80 lb range, near the top. That's 15 lb to lose, about 17% of current body weight.
For feeding: RER at the 75 lb target (34.0 kg) is 70 Γ 34.0^0.75 β 986 kcal. Two dogs of the same breed can differ by 20 lb and both be perfect. Build matters: a narrow-chested Labrador at 80 lb is overweight while a broad Bernese at 80 lb is mid-range. When the BCS math and the breed range disagree hard β say the math says your "55 lb Beagle" should be 45 β trust the hands-on score and confirm with your vet.
