AC bills range from a rounding error to a month's rent, and the difference is almost entirely which component failed. Cost = parts (low or high, × luxury factor if applicable) + flat-rate hours × labor rate. Refrigerant matters because the system only holds 1-2 pounds of it but R-1234yf costs 3-4 times what R-134a does: the recharge row uses refrigerant-specific parts pricing, and any other sealed-system repair adds $75-$180 with R-1234yf since it ends in a recharge. Luxury vehicles carry a 1.5× parts factor (OEM compressors and condensers simply cost more).
Check your refrigerant first — it's on the under-hood sticker (R-134a vs R-1234yf; most cars from the mid-2010s onward use the latter). Pick the service your shop described, not the one you hope it is, and set your local rate (independents $100-$150/hr, dealers $150-$190). If you only know "it blows warm," run the leak-diagnosis row: that's the honest starting bill, and many shops credit it toward the repair.
A 2019 Accord with a dead compressor, R-134a, independent shop at $120/hr: parts $450-$900 plus 2.5-4.5 hours ($300-$540) = $750-$1,440 installed, midpoint $1,095. Because a failed compressor often sheds debris, the correct job is the full restore — compressor plus drier plus flush plus recharge — $1,130-$1,980 at the same rate. Skipping the drier to save $90 on a $1,400 repair is how the new compressor dies young.
Second example: a 2017 German sedan with a leaking evaporator. Luxury parts (×1.5) run $225-$750, and the labor is the story — 6-10 hours of dash removal at $145/hr = $1,095-$2,200 installed, midpoint about $1,648. That's why evaporators, not compressors, are the repair that retires old cars' AC forever.
The overall average AC repair runs $384-$445, but the spread is wide by failure: a recharge is $105-$210 with R-134a ($220-$440 with R-1234yf), leak diagnosis and repair lands $145-$600, a compressor replacement $750-$1,440, and an evaporator — which means dash removal — $870-$1,700 on a standard car. What feels like a $200 problem is usually a $150-$400 leak repair plus recharge; what feels catastrophic is usually the compressor.
The overwhelming cause is low refrigerant from a slow leak — the system holds only 1-2 pounds, and losing 15% is enough to feel. Next most common: a failed compressor clutch or compressor, a clogged expansion valve or orifice tube, a hole in the condenser (road debris), or an electrical fault in the pressure switch or blower circuit. The order matters: a shop that recharges without dye-testing for the leak is selling you the same repair again in three months.
Compare the repair to the car's value and your climate. A $300 recharge-and-seal in a $5,000 car is obviously fine. A $1,100 compressor in a $6,000 car is an 18% repair that also raises resale in warm states — defensible if you're keeping the car, marginal if you're not. Skip repairs that exceed a third of the car's value; in a genuinely old car, aftermarket seat fans and a good windshield shade are the honest alternative.
R-1234yf is the refrigerant in most vehicles from the mid-2010s onward; it runs roughly 3-4 times the price of R-134a per pound (a full recharge is $220-$440 versus $105-$210), partly material cost and partly the dedicated recovery equipment shops must buy for it. It's also why the same AC repair costs more on a newer car. Older cars using R-134a keep the cheaper math, and pre-1994 cars on R-12 are their own expensive museum piece.
You can, and a $45-$60 DIY can sometimes carries a marginally low system through a season. But a system that needs recharging has a leak — you're replacing the refrigerant that escaped without fixing where it went, and over-the-counter cans often add sealant and stop-leak compounds that a professional machine has to clean out later, turning a $300 repair into a $600 one. If the AC worked last summer and died this June, pay for the $145-$360 leak diagnosis first.
